‘monkey’ is the latest track from heka, a unique voice in London's underground indie scene. The track grows steadily, with layers of samples blending with a dark electric guitar and distant lo-fi beats to accompany a tender lead vocal. By the end of the track, maximalist musical swells are provided by distorted synths and layers of percussion. “Symbolically referencing the “three monkeys” (don’t see, don’t hear, don’t speak) to describe the context of an emotionally abusive relationship, monkey follows thematically from I'm the thorn, expressing a similar sentiment of codependency and conflict,” she says, of the track’s connection to her previous single. ‘monkey’ is the third and final single from her upcoming EP, swan songs, which will be celebrated at Avalon Cafe in Bermondsey on October 19th, 2023. -Dan Peeke
